The big question is, why does Windows 7 install applications differently on different machines? Internet explorer 9 should have showed up in the "Installed Updates" or "Programs and Features" list but was in neither.

Don't try to uninstall IE9. The only problem is that you have to do this every time using F12 or Tools F12 Developer view.
