They use digital signal processing to simulate studio equipment inside your DAW. Before plugins, whenever you needed to use a compressor, an equalizer, or any other effect, you not only needed to have it physically. And while this might not seem like a big deal these days for some studios, it made life for the small producer very expensive. When this started happening, plugins were, as they still are, way cheaper than hardware. And they also took no physical space, which enabled budget studios to emerge.
A new debate of analog versus digital was born, and for some time, digital was losing. Twenty-five years into the first plugins were released, recording technology has evolved a lot more than in the forty years prior, and digital audio is still at its dawn. The rise of audio plugins started with the VST, but later other developers started creating similar constructions, and new formats were born. But what do these acronyms mean?
It is an open-source technology, which means third-party companies can develop VSTs. I have a small handful on iOS. I guess I could do my own testing. Maybe I will at some point. Stormchild , Sep 9, Oh VST 3 is coming to maschine?
The possibilities with Reason 11 is mind blowing. Kaydigi , Sep 9, I install both VST and AU on my computers, it's worth it for a really simple reason, most of the time when a plug in is buggy, it's buggy with either the AU or the VST version and you can switch to the other at will. VST3 is the future and as soon as stable versions are here I will use them. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and opinions.
Hey Matt NI can we get you or anyone from NI to chime in on any performance difference or advantages to using either version within Maschine? Perhaps Mac or Windows systems prefer one or the other? Are there scenarios why one may be better for specific types of projects or workflows? Thanks in advance for any attention to this matter. GoKeez , Jul 19, VST2 is the most widely used format for about 25 years and is a standard format used by Windows users. While almost all DAWs running on Windows support it, it is available for Mac as well though a little less widespread.
Both these formats are quite popular and there is no difference for the end user between the two formats. VST plugin was introduced as a free plugin in to change the way music was handled on computers. Since then, it has become the industry standard and the most widely implemented format across the world. The format evolved through the years and is available in its 3 rd generation today, commonly known as VST3.
It has been widely used as a common interface type for instruments and effects and can be used everywhere. VST format is not recognized by Logic Pro so it is not possible to install plugins in this format on the software. Only the Mac only format Audio Unit is compatible with the Mac workstation to host third party music plugin effects and instruments.
Quick links. VST vs. After a lengthy absence I am getting back into Live having just purchased 7! Crashes, time lags, CPU drain etc. Post by glitchrock-buddha » Fri Jan 09, pm Doesn't really matter. I like that AU's only have one version of every plug-in for different output configurations personally. Post by salatspinatra » Fri Jan 09, pm I've was curious about this too, and got an overall consensus that AU's have just a slight edge over VST's.
I've listened to some AU's and very subjectively thought they sounded "better" than their vst counterparts.
